Summer 2024' Update: Growth and Leadership

This summer has been filled with experiences that allowed me to explore my passion for journalism, leadership, and advocacy. Here's how these opportunities prepared me to lead during my senior year:

AAJA/JCalMatters Journalism Program ‘24

In this program, I sharpened my journalism skills, publishing “Unveiling Bias: College Programs and the Workforce” (on JCalMatters and LA Times High School Insider). Mentored by LA Times Political Correspondent Seema Mehta, I learned how to conduct impactful interviews, like with Senator Anthony Portantino. Touring the California State Capitol strengthened my understanding of journalism’s real-world impact. I also served as Site Manager for the 2024 JCalMatters cohort, overseeing the compilation of articles and photos for the  JCAL website.

Takeaway: This program enhanced my investigative reporting and editorial management skills. As President and Editor-in-Chief of DV Connect Lit, I’m ready to apply these lessons to our publication.

Friendship Foundation Volunteer @ Summer Camp

Volunteering at the Friendship Foundation was especially meaningful as I shared this experience with my brother, watching him gain confidence and form friendships. Working with students with disabilities through activities like bingo and water play helped me connect personally with them and emphasized the importance of inclusive environments.

Takeaway: This experience not only strengthened my bond with my brother but deepened my resolve for  disability advocacy. As I enter my senior year, I am inspired to continue raising awareness and create supportive spaces for others, ensuring no one feels isolated or misunderstood.

Columbia Scholastic Press Association Summer Journalism Workshop @ Columbia University

As the recipient of the Greenman Leadership Grant for the 2024 Summer Journalism Workshop, I refined my editorial leadership skills at Columbia University. Workshops and hands-on activities helped me develop an action plan for DV Connect Lit, including policies for content management and social media strategy.

Takeaway: The skills I gained have helped to create a clear vision for leading our magazine.

Snap Lens Lab Program @ Otis College of Art and Design

I combined creativity and technology, designing Snap Lenses using Adobe Photoshop, Maya, and Lens Studio. My lenses, including “Disney Ears” and “Feminist Rise” (inspired by Kamala Harris), have been used by over a thousand Snap Creators and earned me a place in the Snap Digital Goods program.

Takeaway: I learned how digital art and marketing can create engaging content.

I’m thrilled to have followed my passion for leadership, storytelling, and advocacy this summer. As I head into my senior year, I’m determined to make an impact—whether through DV Connect Lit, Girl Up, or my continued work in journalism and advocacy. A heartfelt thank you to Michael Lozano, Felicia Chanco, and my mentors from Columbia University and Snap + Otis College.
