As the Founder, President, and Editor-in-Chief of DV Connect Lit, our high school's literary arts magazine club, I'm proud to share our journey over the past two years. Starting from a shared passion for literature and diversity, we've grown into a dynamic group committed to making a difference within and beyond our school's walls.
Our Milestones:
*Inaugural Book Drive: We launched with a successful book drive for our high school library to support hashtag#bannedbooksweek, focusing on diverse and inclusive reads. We received over 100 book donations for our schools library. This set the tone for our commitment to celebrating and amplifying diverse voices.
*National Hispanic Heritage Month: We embraced cultural celebration by creating an ofrenda for remembrance cards during National Hispanic Heritage Month, coupled with a screening of "Disney/Pixar Coco." This event was a heartfelt acknowledgment of the rich histories and contributions of Hispanic communities.
*DV Connect Lit Magazine Issues: We've published two issues of our magazine, "Breaking Barriers: Voices of Diversity and Inclusion" https://lnkd.in/g-ZJYqC2 and "Breaking The Silence: Ending The Stigma on Teen Mental Health" https://lnkd.in/g3zk4UkE , addressing crucial societal themes of the importance of diversity and inclusiveness and teen mental health.
*World Mental Health Day: Recognizing the importance of mental well-being, we organized discussions around self-care routines, highlighting our commitment to supporting our peers' mental health.
Exciting Future Plans:
Our journey continues as we partner with AfroLA for a Mentorship Opportunity, enriching our members with workshops in writing, graphic arts, and more. Guided by Ms. Dana Amihere, Founder and Executive Director of AfroLA. We couldn’t be happier to team up with such an amazing mentor for our club.
Stay tuned for our upcoming issue, "The Year of The Girl," this June, as we celebrate and amplify the voices and stories in our community and beyond.
